Who We Are
Tasman’s journey began in 1950 in a modest factory on Latrobe Street, Melbourne — right next to the iconic Shot Tower in what is now Melbourne Central. Founded by Walter Elphinstone, Tasman Engineering specialised in the manufacturing of precision press tools for General Motors Holden.
By the 1970s, Tasman had outgrown its original site and moved to West Heidelberg, establishing itself as a trusted supplier to major automotive manufacturers including GMH and Ford. Walter’s three sons, trained toolmakers themselves, joined the business — forming the second generation of leadership and further cementing the company’s reputation for craftsmanship and innovation.
In the early 1990s, Tasman pivoted from automotive components to retail shop fittings, landing major national contracts with retailers such as Kmart, Target, and Coles. This marked a new era for the company as it transitioned into large-scale retail fixture manufacturing and logistics.
The early 2000s saw Tasman expand internationally, establishing operations and production capabilities across Mainland China. This global footprint allowed the company to scale efficiently and become a key partner in the Australian retail market. In the following decade, Tasman further extended its reach by launching a North American office and warehouse in Los Angeles.
During the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Tasman quickly adapted by designing and supplying sanitisation stations and health equipment for leading retailers, including Woolworths and Coles. The ability to combine local agility with global production allowed us to continue serving clients when it mattered most.
Now under third-generation leadership, Tasman Group continues to evolve. With over 80,000 sqm of combined manufacturing and warehousing facilities across Australia, China, and North America, we remain committed to delivering quality, reliability, and innovation.
From our family to yours — thank you for being part of the journey over the past 75 years. We look forward to the road ahead.
